#14 The Doer's Mindset
It has always fascinated me seeing someone stick with a routine for long enough until they reach where they wanted to be. It drives me crazy to see those hardworking people at the gym who hit the gym consistently without any excuses and build those stunning abs. While we are here, wishing, daydreaming about a distant goal, and doing nothing about it, those people work hard and make their dream a reality.
Lately, I have been thinking a lot about what makes them, the doers, different from us, the wishers, and I have come to a profound observation. What makes the doers different from the wishers is not their body, their resources, or their environment. Of course, they are all factors that affect the performance of an individual, but not necessarily. The primary trait that makes the doers different from the wishers is their mindset.
The way they approach life and work is entirely different from ordinary people. Their values are different and their thinking pattern is different. While we can see hundreds of different distinct characteristics in their thinking pattern and values if studied closely, I would like to mention 3 of the most important traits that I have noticed in almost every top performer.
- They care way more about effort than the outcome - They know that if they put in the effort, the outcome will inevitably happen. So once they have decided to work on a goal, they see their goal as a mere direction and forget about it. They focus all their energy on determining the best strategy and tasks and executing them. They don't worry or even care about the goal most of the time, instead all that they are concerned about is their effort and time that they put in.
- They find more joy and excitement in the journey than the result - They don't wait for the results to be happy. They find more happiness in the process because they know that the result is not going to give them lasting happiness. It is only a temporary feeling. So it is dumb to actually wait for the result to be happy. It's all about the journey for them. Of course, they love the results also but for them, the journey is itself as exciting and fun as the result, maybe more.
- They are really good at distributing their time for deliberation and action - Putting in the effort is great but what if the effort is ineffective. Action without deliberation is dumb and deliberation without action is futile. The doers know this very well. So, they take enough time to pause and reflect every once in a while. They closely analyze if the effort is effective at taking them closer to their goal or not. If it is effective, they continue with it and work harder, and if not, they research more, study more, and employ a different strategy. So the doers are essentially really good at distributing their time for deliberation and action.
These are the most important traits that I have noticed in them and I am also working on implementing these mindsets to my life as well.
